DJ Miles Money

Real Name: Bill Rautzen
Position: DJ Instructor (Bethesda)

DJ Miles MoneyBill Rautzen is a Dayton, Ohio native that made his way out to the DC metro area after graduating college. One of the major influences in his wanting to become a DJ was watching Doug Pray’s 2001 documentary, Scratch. He purchased two Technics 1200’s, a Stanton mixer, and started collecting records. Not being a good self-teacher, he could never make the turntables do the things that he saw in that film. The day that all changed was when he saw a write-up online of a brand-new school for DJs in Bethesda, Maryland, called the Beat Refinery.

Bill started taking classes at the Beat Refinery when it first opened its doors in May, 2010. He enrolled in the Basic class as a last-ditch effort to learn how to properly use the DJ equipment he had purchased a few years prior. Basically, if he didn’t pick up on it during that six week course, he was going to sell all that equipment and move on. With the excellent instruction from DJs As-One and Stylus Chris as his first instructors, he formed the basis for everything he needed to know to continue on through the rest of the Beat Refinery catalog, ultimately becoming one of the first DJs certified through the Beat Refinery Certificate Program.

Along the way he volunteered to help out at the school, setting up the equipment on Mondays and breaking it down again on Thursdays. Founders Stylus Chris and DJ Geometrix realized that they couldn’t get rid of him, so they hired him to work as the Operations Manager at the Bethesda location. As of the Winter 2012 Semester at the Beat Refinery, he can add the label “Instructor” to his title, as he has been given the go-ahead to teach both the Intro and the Basic courses, and can fill in for other instructors when the need arises.
