Scratching Program

No matter what level you’re at (beginner to advanced) students are billed on a monthly plan of $175 a month.  Work side by side with your instructor and complete each level at your own pace.  The time to complete this course is based on your own progress, along with your instructor advancing you through each level.  Pick the day and time that works for you and REGISTER TODAY!  If you have any more questions, please refer to our FAQ PAGE or EMAIL.

Cost: $175 a month (Please Note: There will be a $20 materials fee for all students payable on the first day of class.)


Level 1: Intro to DJing

Prerequisites: No previous DJ experience necessary. Strictly for the beginners.

Students will learn:

  • - Brief overview of the history, culture, and the art of the DJ as well as possible careers in the DJ business
  • - Basic Functions of the DJ Equipment (Turntables, Mixer, Needles, Slipmats, Vinyl Records, Speakers, Etc.)
  • - Introduction to Serato Scratch Live, the Industry Standard DJ Vinyl Emulation Software
  • - Hand/Eye/Ear Fundamentals
  • - Introduction to Music Theory for the DJ
  • - Introduction to Scratching (Baby Scratch)
  • - Introduction to Mixing on 2 Turntables

 


Level 2: Basic Scratching

Prerequisites: Level 1: Intro to DJing

Students will learn:

  • - Scratches: Baby, Scribble, Release, Forward, Backward, Stab, Transform, Chirp
  • - Combinations of scratches learned
  • - Strategic uses of scratches during mixing
  • - Music theory for the scratch DJ

 


Level 3: Advanced Scratching

Prerequisites: Level 2: Basic Scratching

Students will learn:

  • - Scratches: Original flare, 1 click flare, 2 click flare
  • - Combinations of scratches learned
  • - Drumming technique
  • - Basic looping technique
  • - Music theory for the scratch DJ

 


Level 4: Beat Juggling

Prerequisites: Level 3: Advanced Scratching

Students will learn:

  • - Looping techniques
  • - Trick mixing techniques: phasing, doubling, echoing
  • - Tapping techniques
  • - Chase patterns
  • - 1-2 patterns
  • - More drumming techniques
  • - Y record theory
  • - Music theory for the scratch DJ

 


Level 5: The Battle DJ

Prerequisites: Level 4: Beat Juggling

Students will learn:

  • - How to put together a battle routine
  • - Difference between head-to-head battles and showcase battles
  • - Breakdown of championship winning routines
  • - Effective uses of scratch and beat juggling routines
  • - Effective uses of wordplay
  • - Music composition for the scratch DJ
